Who we are

West of England Women’s Commission’s Women’s Health Task Group exists to ensure women in the West are healthy and happy.

What we cover

From fertility, pregnancy and menopause to mental health and chronic pain, health research, support and outcomes for women vary massively when compared with men - we exist to address this.

Our mission

A region where women and girls are well supported with appropriate health care, and are listened to by health professionals.

Who’s involved

Annual review 25/26

Work completed this year:

The Women's Health Task Group, co-chaired by Monira Ahmed Chowdhury and Penny Gane, has spent the year on foundational work, including launching a project to map women’s organisations and health services across the region. This groundwork has been critical for identifying key challenges and developing a strategic action plan.

We cover the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority region, which comprises:

  • Bristol

  • Bath and North East Somerset

  • South Gloucestershire

Chairs: Penny Gane and Monira Ahmed Chowdhury

Members: Bristol Health Partners, Black Mothers Matter, Womankind, BW Hospitals charity, Missing Link Housing, University of the West of England, Bristol Women’s Voice, Bristol City Council Public Health, Minister of State Secondary Care.

Our focus for 2026 and beyond

The Women’s Commission Summit Health Roundtable, led by the Co-Chairs, highlighted the range of women’s health initiatives locally and built on input from the thematic task group meetings.  The Co-Chairs have continued to co-ordinate and chair the successful annual health panel at Bristol International Women’s Day celebrations.
